A Safer Winter Hat

Humpty Hat is a new invention that combines the comfort, ease of use, and superior warmth of the typical fleece hat with a modest amount of protection against head trauma from winter recreational sports and activities. Humpty Hat uses specific anatomical mapping of the protection zones to design the safest hat you can buy.

Head Injury Statistics for Winter Activities:

Winter recreational sports (ice skating, skiing, snowboarding, and sledding) accounted for 30,000 serious head injury cases in 2007 according to Neurosurgery Today, a leading physician’s industry journal.   Additionally, less than 40% of all skiers and snowboarders wear helmets, less than 5% of ice skaters wear helmets and only 1% of sled riders wear them.

The most common winter recreational head injuries involve simple falls where the head
often strikes the ground causing a concussive effect.  Concussions are the most common serious head injury for winter activities.  Astoundingly, even falls of less than two feet can be potentially dangerous.

Thermo-Shield Placement Rationale:

The areas most often affected by head injury are:

Occipital area (back of head)
Parietal area (top of the head)
Frontal area (forehead)

These are the specific areas that are protected by the XLPE 1900 foam poly shields.  By reinforcing these vulnerable areas, superior protection is literally built into every Humpty Hat, offering greatly enhanced safety over a traditional winter hat.

Independent laboratory testing shows the Humpty Hat reduces head injury risk

Although it is not a helmet and should not be used as such, independent laboratory testing has determined that the Humpty Hat provides a cushioning safety factor when compared to regular hats. The data clearly shows a substantial reduction in deceleration, which when converted to the HIC score translates into a reduced risk of moderate head injury by up to 47%. HIC stands for Head Injury Criterion. It is used to determine the NHTSA star rating for automobile safety and to determine ratings given by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Sport physiologists and biomechanics experts use the HIC in the research of safety equipment and guidelines for competitive sport and recreation.

A Warmer Hat

Thermo analysis also shows that the insulating property of XLPE 1900 foam provides 300% better heat insulation than Polar fleece alone.
And since 80% of heat loss in cold temperatures is lost through the top (parietal) portion of the head, we have designed a XLPE 1900 form that also provides maximum insulation in the key area of heat loss.
